‘Cats Fall to No. 2 Maryland in Back-and-forth Clash

EVANSTON, Ill. – Despite a six-goal performance by Selena Lasota, No. 5 Northwestern fell to No. 2 Maryland on Thursday night, 17-13.

Lasota led the lines for the Wildcats with eight of the team's 24 shots on goal. Her six goals brought her total to 50 on the season, the most in the Big Ten. She now ranks 16th in NCAA history with 247 career goals.

Izzy Scane added a hat-trick of her own on five shots as well as an assist, and Lauren Gilbert and Emily Stein each added a pair to round out the scoresheet. The Wildcats' 13 goals are the most scored against Maryland this season.

The game was suspended due to lightning midway through the second half with the score knotted at 12. Once play resumed an hour later on Wilson Field in Ryan Fieldhouse, the Terrapins scored three straight goals to capture the lead for good.

The Wildcats jumped out to a quick start with the first three goals of the game within a 55-second span, with Lasota scoring the first of her six goals to open the scoring. Pairs of goals from Lasota, Gilbert, and Stein helped put the 'Cats in front 7-4 with five minutes left in the opening frame.

After a trio of Terrapin goals tied the game going into the break, Northwestern rebounded with a Lasota goal to regain the lead. The two teams were locked in a back and forth battle for the majority of the second half. On two occasions, Scane scored game-tying goals after Maryland had pulled ahead. After a Terrapin goal tied the scoring at 12, the weather conditions were deemed unsafe and the action was moved indoors.

Senior goalkeeper Mallory Weisse stepped between the pipes for her first start of the season, delivering one of the best games of her career. Weisse made saves on seven of Maryland's 14 shots on goal in the first half, before tying her career-high with 13 saves on the game.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action against No. 8 Michigan on Thursday, April 18 for Senior Day at Martin Stadium. Senior day festivities will begin prior to the game's 3 p.m. CT start.
