EVANSTON, Ill. – After a 3-2 showing last weekend in Oklahoma, Northwestern has its sights set on Bloomington, Indiana for a doubleheader on Saturday in the Hoosier Classic.
The Wildcats will face off against Toledo at 9 a.m., followed by a matchup against the hosts, No. 19 Indiana, at 2 p.m. that will count as a non-conference game for both teams.
Now 17-6 on the year, Northwestern is off to its best start to a season since 2014. Saturday's doubleheader marks the last weekend of non-conference games for the 'Cats before opening Big Ten play. They will begin conference play next week, March 22-24, for a series against Rutgers at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
Tickets for next weekend's home series can be bought HERE.
Season passes can be bought HERE for $49 for adults and $29 for youth.
The full Hoosier Classic is a three-day event that also includes Ohio vs. St. Francis. This will mark the Wildcats' first matchup against Toledo since 1993, in which they defeated the Rockets 1-0. NU and Indiana faced off twice last season, both in pre-conference play, with the #B1GCats taking both matchups, 5-1 and 9-2 respectively. Northwestern leads the all-time series against Indiana, 66-38, and has won its last six matchups against the Hoosiers dating back to 2013.
Through five weeks of action, Northwestern's first year class has been excellent on the diamond, led by Nikki Cuchran, Jordyn Rudd, Maeve Nelson and Danielle Williams.
At the plate, Cuchran leads the team with 24 hits and a .353 batting average on the year. Rudd has 25 RBI on the year, the fifth-most in the Big Ten and the most by a first-year in the conference. Last weekend in Oklahoma, Maeve Nelson scored a team-high five runs for the Wildcats, drawing four walks and finishing with three hits.
The #B1GCats have seen great success across the board from their pitching staff. Northwestern pitchers have hurled 171 strikeouts, good for second in the Big Ten. Entering this weekend, NU is one of just two Big Ten schools to have multiple pitchers with 50+ strikeouts (also Michigan). Williams is tied for third in the conference with 103 strikeouts, having crossed the century mark last Saturday against Tulsa, while Kenna Wilkey ranks ninth with 52.
The Wildcats have both started and finished games strong so far on the season. Northwestern has outscored its opponents 32-9 in the first inning and 16-2 in the seventh inning. The Wildcats have scored in the opening frame in 11 of their 23 games thus far and are 11-0 in those games.
