‘Cats Split Sunday Doubleheader

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern split a pair of matches with No. 32 Texas Tech and UIC Sunday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center, 2-4 and 4-0 respectively.
No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Nick Brookes and first-year Simen Bratholm faced off against Texas Tech's eighth ranked doubles team of Bjorn Thomas and Parker Wynn. Brookes and Bratholm took them to 6-6 tie breaker before falling 7-6 (7-4). At No. 3 singles, first-year Trice Pickens and sophomore Antonioni Fasano fell to team of Matheus Leite and Ilgiz Valiev 6-4, clinching the doubles point for Texas Tech.
In singles, the Red Raiders took the first two points with wins from the No. 2 and No. 1 matches, but the Wildcats stormed back winning the next two points from Bratholm (7-6, 6-2) and junior Chris Ephron (3-6, 6-4, 6-2) at the No. 5 and No. 4 spots. From the No. 6 spot, Pickens took it Franco Ribero to a second-set tie breaker before falling 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
The 'Cat were back on the court a few hours later, to take on UIC in their second meeting of the season.
NU claimed first point of the match with doubles wins from the teams of Bratholm/Brookes (6-2) and seniors Michael Lorenzini and Jason Seidman (6-1).
The Wildcats would claim the next three points from the No. 2, 3 and 4 matches. On court 5, Fasano grabbed the first singles point of the match, defeating Niko Wasilewicz, 6-3, 6-0. Ephron brought the 'Cats within one point of clinching the match by dropping Casper Parklo 6-2, 6-0. To secure the fourth point and clinching the match for the 'Cats, Bratholm made quick work of UIC's Panchapakesan, 6-1, 6-3,
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back on the court March 30 to take on Iowa at Combe Tennis Center starting at noon.
