Wildcats Walked Off by Lions in First Loss of the Season
2/9/2019 7:21:00 PM | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif. – Northwestern dropped its first game of the season Saturday evening on a walk-off to Loyola Marymount, 3-2.
The Wildcats move to 3-1 on the season. Sophomore Kenna Wilkey pitched the first three innings, allowing seven hits and one unearned run, while walking two. Junior Morgan Newport took the loss with 3.2 innings pitched, four hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
First year Jordyn Rudd continued her tear to start 2019 by going 2-3 with a double and a single. Her classmate Maeve Nelson went 1-3 with a clutch RBI double in the sixth.
Loyola Marymount opened the game with a run in the first inning to break Northwestern's season-opening streak of 19.1 scoreless innings. Wilkey settled down the next inning after working out of a bases loaded jam en-route to throwing three scoreless frames.
The Wildcats tied the ballgame up in the third inning after Lily Novak reached first on an error. Skyler Shellmyer advanced Novak with a bunt and then Rachel Lewis dribbled a ball into the infield. After an error by the Lions' second baseman, Novak raced all the way home to even the score at 1-1.
Loyola Marymount retook the lead in the fifth inning on a home run with two outs off of Newport.
Northwestern fought back once more in the sixth with some clutch hitting. First year Nikki Cuchran smacked a double to the wall with two outs to bring up Maeve Nelson. The fellow rookie launched a double to center field wall to score Eva Stees, who pinch ran for Cuchran, to level the game at 2-2.
The game seemed destined for extra innings after Newport retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh. The Lions rallied with a single and a double, and even after first year Danielle Williams entered the game, they knocked in a single to walk-off the contest.
The #B1GCats wrap up the Titan Classic tomorrow against Idaho State with a chance to go 4-1 and cap off a strong opening weekend. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT.
