Northwestern Rallies With Four in the Seventh, Improves to 4-1

2/10/2019 3:02:00 PM | Softball

FULLERTON, Calif. – Northwestern erased an early three-run deficit and rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to a 7-4 victory over Idaho State in their final game of the Titan Classic.

First-year Danielle Williams improved to a perfect 3-0 on the season after entering the game to pitch in the fourth inning. She tallied four strikeouts over 3.2 innings while allowing just five hits and one run. Williams also finished 1-for-1 with two RBI at the plate and was responsible for the eventual game-winning single in the seventh inning.

Trailing 3-0 in the fourth inning, Northwestern began to cut into the deficit after Mac Dunlap scored on a wild pitch and Morgan Nelson drove in first-year Skyler Shellmyer with a single. In the sixth inning, Rachel Lewis tied the game, 3-3, with a lead-off home run, her second of the weekend.

Idaho State took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Williams came through at the plate in the top of the seventh with the go-ahead single to drive in Lily Novak and Eva Stees and give Northwestern a 5-4 advantage.

The #B1GCats added to their lead later in the inning thanks to a two-RBI single from first-year Jordyn Rudd, who finished the weekend batting .467 (7-for-15) with a team-leading 10 RBI.

Senior Kaley Winegarner made her first start for Northwestern since February 16 of last season and allowed two runs in 1.0 inning. Morgan Newport pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed one unearned run while striking out three. Newport also reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk.

Morgan Nelson and first-year Nikki Cuchran also had multi hit games, as each finished 2-for-4 with a walk.

The win moves the 'Cats to 4-1 following their first weekend of action. Northwestern will be back on Friday, February 15 when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for two matchups apiece against Louisville and North Carolina in the B1G/ACC Challenge.
