Wildcats Rally in the Seventh to Secure Third-Straight Shutout

FULLERTON, Calif. – First-year Danielle Williams took the circle for her second-consecutive start and threw another complete game shutout to help propel Northwestern to a 1-0 victory over Louisville in the first game of a doubleheader in the second day at the Titan Classic.
The win is the #B1GCats' third-straight shutout victory to open the season, marking 19 consecutive shutout innings thus far. This is the first time since 1984 in which Northwestern has started 3-0 with three shutout wins.
The Wildcats had a runner reach base in each of the first five innings, but could not get a runner across. First-year shortstop Maeve Nelson reached base twice in that span, recording a walk in the second inning and a single in the fourth.
Morgan Newport began the Wildcats' rally in the top of the seventh inning with a lead-off triple. Emma Bartz pinch ran for Newport and was driven home on a sac fly from Lily Novak with one out.
Williams recorded 13 strikeouts while allowing just two hits. After allowing a hit in the first inning, she proceeded to retire 17-consecutive batters. Louisville had a runner reach via a triple to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but Williams quickly retired the next three batters to close the door on the Cardinals.
Northwestern will finish its double-header at 5 p.m. central time against Loyola Marymount. Fans can watch on Flosoftball.com or follow along to @NUSBCats on Twitter for updates.
