No. 7 ’Cats Open 2019 WIth Emphatic Win over Louisville, 21-11

2/8/2019 9:36:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

EVANSTON, Ill. — The seventh-ranked Northwestern lacrosse program opened the 2019 season with an emphatic 21-11 win over Louisville Friday evening in the inaugural game at Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field.

Ten different Wildcats scored a goal with six of them recording at least two. Senior Selena Lasota led all scorers with five goals, while senior Claire Quinn and sophomore Lauren Gilbert each had a hat trick. The 21 goals scored by the Wildcats were the most in a season opener since they scored 24 against Denver in 2009.

The youth movement showed, as five of the seven first-years saw playing time. First-year Izzy Scane's debut was promising, as she scored just 12 seconds into the game. She finished her collegiate debut with a pair of goals, a team-leading four caused turnovers, four draw controls and three ground balls.

The #B1GCats dominated offensively with 36 shots over Louisville's 20. The 'Cats also forced 13 turnovers, while winning the draw control battle, 19-13. Sophomore midfielder Brennan Dwyer led all players with a career-high 12 draw controls while tallying three points on a pair of goals and an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Krupnick recorded five saves and allowed only six goals before first-year Madison Doucette and senior Mallory Weisse finished the game off with the 'Cats up big.

Junior Lindsey McKone led the team with two assists. In total, nine different 'Cats tallied an assist. In the end, 14 different 'Cats finished with at least one point on the day.

The 'Cats opened the game up with a 3-2 lead, before scoring nine-straight goals as a part of a 12-2 run to take a 15-4 advantage into halftime. Northwestern recorded 10 more shots on goal than the Cardinals and eight more ground balls. The #B1GCats only committed six turnovers in the first half while forcing 10.

Louisville fought back in the second to bring the lead down to nine, but Northwestern kept up the pressure, not allowing a goal in the final five minutes of the game to seal the victory.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Friday, February 15 when it hosts Dartmouth at Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
