WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- Northwestern came up short in its first Big Ten matchup at Purdue on Sunday afternoon. The Boilermakers came out on top with a 58-44 victory in Mackey Arena.
Five Wildcats made their Big Ten basketball debuts, including starters Pat Spencer and Ryan Young.
Sophomore Pete Nance knocked down two consecutive threes in the first minute and a half of the game to get the Northwestern offense started. Nance continued to shine with a team-leading 14 points to go along with six rebounds and an assist. His 14 points were the most scored by a Wildcat at Mackey Arena since Dererk Pardon had 20 in 2017. This marks the fourth time the Akron, Ohio native has put up double-figures so far this season. Young also grabbed seven boards while first year Boo Buie notched a career high two steals.
Defense was the story of the first half. Northwestern held Purdue to 22 points and 1-of-14 shooting from 3-point range at the break.
An offensive surge from Purdue started the second stanza and looked to put the game out of reach, however, a late Northwestern push sparked by a Miller Kopp three and more muscle at the rim from Nance put the 'Cats within seven but it was not enough to close the gap as Purdue pulled away in the final minutes.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action next Sunday, Dec. 15, as the 'Cats welcome SIU-Edwardsville to Welsh-Ryan Arena at 3 p.m.
