Wildcats Knock Off No. 12 Maryland in Rout at Welsh-Ryan

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern toppled No. 12 Maryland, 81-58, in Tuesday afternoon's game at Welsh-Ryan Arena in a resounding rout.
The Wildcats improved to 12-1 and 2-0 in the Big Ten while earning their first ranked win of the season. The win was the Wildcats' best ranked victory since defeating No. 5 Ohio State on Jan. 14, 2016.
The 'Cats knocked off the Terrapins for the first time in program history and handed Maryland their worst loss in conference since they joined the Big Ten ahead of the 2015 season.
In the first half, the Wildcats outpaced the Terrapins, 34-23. Lindsey Pulliam led the 'Cats with nine points. Sophomore Veronica Burton was a close second with eight points and two rebounds.
In the second half, Pulliam and Burton each scored 15 points. Pulliam had seven rebounds and three assists while Burton had two rebounds.
Overall, Pulliam led the Wildcats with 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Burton was right behind her with 23 points, four rebounds, three assists and six steals. Pulliam went 10-10 from the free throw line while Burton was 14-15 from the charity stripe.
Seniors Abi Scheid and Abbie Wolf also impressed. Scheid had 12 points and three assists while Wolf had 10 points and six rebounds.
Chicago's Big Ten Team let No. 12 Maryland score only 58 points, 28 below their season average of 86 points per game.
The 'Cats will be back in action on Sunday as they host Iowa at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. on BTN.
