EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern used a breakout performance from Ryan Young to charge past Norfolk State, 70-59, on Friday night in Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Young, a redshirt first-year, notched his first-career double-double with a career-high 19 points and another personal-best 12 rebounds. The center was 11-12 from the charity stripe, marking the first time a Wildcat has made over 10 free throws in a game since Vic Law against LaSalle in November 2018. As a team, the 'Cats shot 27-30 from the free throw line, good for a season-high 90%.

Sophomores Nance and Miller Kopp joined Young in double-digit scoring with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Kopp filled out his stat sheet with five rebounds and four assists, tying a career-high in the latter.

First-year Boo Buie got things going for the 'Cats with his first-career steal before threading the needle to find Miller Kopp for the layup. Buie would go on to set his career-high in assists with four in the contest.

Northwestern held Norfolk State without a bucket for nearly seven minutes in the middle of in the first half, allowing the Wildcats to go on a 12-0 run. The scoring run included four Ryan Young free throws, Jared Jones' first collegiate points, and a Miller Kopp three.

While NU's 16 first-half free throws kept them in the game, it was three-pointers that helped them pull away towards the end of the period. Pete Nance drained three treys, including a buzzer-beater to close the half, which set a new career-high for the sophomore.

The stellar shooting helped the Wildcats to a 37-25 lead at halftime. Nance led all players with 13 points at the break, marking his second consecutive game with double-digit scoring and third such performance this season.

The Wildcats continued the intensity out of the locker room, with Anthony Gaines grabbing a steal and breaking away for a dunk on the first possession of the second stanza.

Boo Buie contributed in a big way in the second half, shooting 5-5 from the line on his way to a career-high nine points. Young continued to dominate with 10 boards in the second half, including seven of the offensive variety. Pat Spencer also grabbed seven of his career-best nine boards in the period, while dishing out four assists.

Northwestern remained sharp from the charity stripe down the stretch, finishing 11-12 in the second half to put the game away. When the clock hit zero, the Wildcats held a 70-59 lead for a victory in the final matchup in their four-game homestand to start the season.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will head to Florida to participate in the Fort Myers Tip-Off for the first time. Their first matchup will be against Bradley at 7:30 P.M. CT on Monday, Nov. 25, before facing either Kansas State or Pittsburg in the second round of the tournament on Wednesday.
