EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern fell to the visiting Iowa Hawkeyes Wednesday evening in a back-and-forth affair at the new Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats put four scorers into double figures, led by Anthony Gaines and Vic Law, who each added 13 points. Gaines did not register a miss in the game, making all three of his field goal attempts and going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Law also racked up 10 rebounds to record his second-consecutive double-double.
The visitors got off to a quick start, leading 9-2 before the hosts found a spark through Gaines. The sophomore kicked off a run for the 'Cats with a three-point play, before adding a pair of free throws and another contested layup. His seven points were part of an 11-4 run by NU that tied the contest at 13 apiece just over eight minutes in.
Iowa responded with run of its own, stretching the lead back to nine before Northwestern answered once more. A steal by Law — already his third of the evening — and fast-break dunk capped an 8-0 run that made it 28-27 with three minutes to play in the half.
In the final minute of the frame, the Wildcats looked to seize momentum as A.J. Turner pulled up from several feet beyond the arc and drilled a three to knot it at 32-32. After a basket from the Hawkeyes on the ensuing possession, Ryan Taylor drove to the hoop in the final seconds and finished under the rim to ensure the teams ended the opening period tied.
Gaines led Northwestern at the break with nine points, including five makes from the charity stripe. Law finished the frame with six points and six rebounds to go along with his trio of steals.
Chicago's Big Ten Team came out of the break firing on all cylinders, ripping off a 10-3 run that put the hosts up by seven after four minutes. Taylor and Turner each contributed three-pointers during the stretch while Turner also added his fourth assist of the game on a bucket by Dererk Pardon.
The Hawkeyes took the lead back over the next several minutes, accentuating the back-and-forth nature of the contest. Two free throws from Law just before the nine-minute mark gave him double figures for the night and brought the 'Cats within five as the game approached its final stages.
The two squads traded baskets as the visitors clung to the lead, with the score reading 65-60 with 4:10 to play. Jordan Bohannon scored six of his eight points in the final three minutes as Iowa pulled away, sealing the victory by a final score of 73-63.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to face undefeated Michigan in Ann Arbor. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
