EVANSTON, Ill. — Both of Northwestern's top-three ranked wrestlers picked up wins in a dual against No. 4 Iowa on Sunday afternoon at the new Welsh-Ryan Arena.
No. 1 Sebastian Rivera (125) improved his unblemished mark to 18-0 with an 11-1 major decision over Perez Perez of Iowa. He picked up eight points, including a short-time four-point near fall, in the final period to defeat the Hawkeye.
No. 3 Ryan Deakin (157) took care of Jeren Glosser of Iowa via 6-1 decision in the final bout before the intermission. Deakin improved to 19-2 on the season.
Two NU grapplers also put on impressive performances against highly-ranked wrestlers. Yahya Thomas, wrestling at 149, took No. 13 Pat Lugo to overtime with the bout knotted at one point apiece. Lugo was able to pick up a point and come away with the narrow victory after three extra periods.
Zack Chakonis also wrestled well at 197, where he took on No. 5 Jacob Warner. Chakonis recorded a takedown and trailed by a single point late in the third period with a chance to send it to overtime, but Warner was able to edge out a 4-2 decision.
Iowa took the dual by a final score of 32-7.
The Wildcats are back in action on February 3 against No. 2 Ohio State. The match will start at 12 p.m. CT from the new Welsh-Ryan Arena.
