Deakin Earns Fifth Top-10 Win in Dual vs. #6 Ohio State

EVANSTON, Ill. — Four Northwestern wrestlers won in a Sunday afternoon dual against No. 6 Ohio State at the new Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Redshirt sophomore Sebastian Rivera (125), the top-ranked matman in his weight class, improved his record to 19-0 on the season with a 12-3 major decision over Ohio State's Hunter Lucas.
With the victory, Rivera recorded his 50th win of his career in only his 58th career bout. He is one of three active Wildcats with at least 50 career wins. Rivera also improved to an unblemished, 9-0 in dual competition and has scored 42 dual points for the Wildcats this season. The win was also his 12th bonus-point victory of the campaign.
Redshirt junior Alec McKenna (141) picked up his first dual win of the campaign with an 8-3 decision over Ohio State's Clay Ragon. He extended the Wildcat lead to 7-3.
Redshirt sophomore Ryan Deakin (157) picked up his third major decision over a ranked opponent this season with an 8-0 shutout win over No. 6 Ke-Shawn Hayes.
En route to going 7-2 against ranked wrestlers this year, No. 3 Deakin has outscored his top-20 foes by a score of 68-38. Five of those wins have come against top-10 grapplers in the nation, including wins over No. 3, No. 6 (now twice), No. 7 and No. 8.
Redshirt senior Conan Jennings (285) commanded the final bout of the day, dominating Gary Traub via an 11-0 major decision to improve to 12-8 on the season.
The Buckeyes topped the Wildcats, 27-15.
Northwestern is back in action on the road next weekend with a pair of duals against Michigan State (Feb. 8) and Michigan (Feb. 10). Friday's match is set for 6 p.m. CT, while Sunday's action will begin at 11 a.m.
