Wildcats Have Strong Showing in Iowa City

IOWA CITY, IOWA – Northwestern wrapped up a strong showing Saturday afternoon in Iowa City in a tri-dual meet against Wisconsin and Iowa. The men finished scoring 111.50 and 106 points against Wisconsin and Iowa respectively. The women scored 133.50 against Wisconsin and 178 against Iowa.
 
The Wildcats started the day with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay by the team of Calypso Sheridan, Sophie Angus, Miriam Guevara and Malorie Han, who touched the wall in 1:39.65. The women had a second team of  Nicole Aarts, Tara Vovk, Alex Grimes and Jasmine Hellmer that finish closely behind in a time of 1:43.0. In the 200 medley, the men finished third with the team of Ryan Gridley, Will Hofstadter, Arjun Sharma and Andrew Zhang in a time of 1:30.00.
 
In a season best time of 10:09.25, sophomore Ilektra Lebl finished third in the 1000 free, leading the 'Cats to a 2-5-6 finish in the race. Also in the 1000 free, DJ Hwang brought home the first Northwestern win of the day in a time of 9:13.96 which bested second place by more than 10 seconds.
 
In a dominant race by the 'Cats, Angus secured the win in the 100 breast in a time of 1:02.11, followed closely by teammates Vovk and Rebecca Kamau who finished second and fifth.
 
In the 100 free, the Wildcats brought home third place finishes on both the men's and women's sides with A. Zhang and Han touching in 44.90 and 51.18 respectively.
 
In the 200 back, the Northwester had four top ten finishes on both sides. For the women, Calypso Sheridan, Emma Theobald, Aarts and Sandra Freeman finished 2-4-6-8 respectively. On the men's side, led by newest Wildcat Manuel Bacarizo, Jack Thorne, R. Gridley and Tyler Liz finished 2-5-7-8.
 
Wildcat duo of Angus and Kamau delivered a 1-2 punch in the women's 200 breast finishing in 2:15.15 and 2:19.46 to claim first and second.
 
On the diving board, senior Olivia Rosendahl brought home wins in the 1 and 3-meter dive. The men finished with two third place finishes from first-year Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson in the 1-meter and senior Ben Magliato, who also earned a zone standard in the 3-meter dive.
 
The 'Cats closed out the meet with third place finishes in the 400 free relay on both the men's and women's side. Relay team of Han, Aarts, Krystal Lara and Hellmer touched in 3:26.58. For the men, A. Zhang, R. Gridley, Hofstadter and Liam Gately finished in 3:00.39.
 
Northwestern will be back in the pool on Jan 25 to take on Louisville.
