'Cats Take No. 2 Indiana to Final Minutes

9/26/2018 8:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Northwestern put on a gutsy second-half performance to equalize the contest, but No. 2 Indiana found the back of the net for the game-winner in the 87th minute top the 'Cats, 2-1, Wednesday night in Bloomington.

"After the first 20 minutes we found our footing and battled one of the best teams in the country on pretty solid terms," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "We just played two difficult road games which included a couple five-plus hour bus trips and three days in a hotel with the rain delay. We will take off tomorrow before getting ready for a very good Michigan team on Saturday. I hope we can get a big crowd with the first week of school and after the Michigan football game. No moral victories but proud of how we responded."

The contest, which was played a day after the scheduled date due to inclement weather and poor field conditions, dropped Northwestern to 4-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in Big Ten play. The win sent Indiana to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 in league action.

The Hoosiers came out fast and dominated possession in the first half, eventually leading the game's first goal in the 19th minute when Justin Rennicks beat Miha Miskovic to give IU a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats locked in and kept Indiana off the board for the remainder of the first half.

It was a tale of two halves as Northwestern opened the second 45 strong. Northwestern maintained possession in the offensive third of the pitch which led to the equalizer in the 55th. Sophomore Garrett Opperman touched it to Matt Moderwell, who put it by the keeper to bring the contest even at 1-1. The goal was Moderwell's first of his career.

Northwestern nearly notched the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute when Jose Del Valle scored, but was called offsides.

Indiana's Griffin Dorsey scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute on a close-range shot to put IU up, 2-1.

The Wildcats will play No. 19 Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Martin Stadium. The game is set for 8 p.m. CT, following the Northwestern-Michigan football game. Fans can get discounted tickets and the men's soccer match by showing their football ticket at the game.
