EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 15 Northwestern comes home to Evanston for the first time this season with clashes against Loyola Marymount and Bowling Green this weekend.
Kickoff against Loyola Marymount is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday at Martin Stadium while the match against Bowling Green starts at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be streamed on BTN2Go.
The Wildcats improved one spot in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll this week to No. 15 after winning last Thursday on the road 1-0 against Missouri in overtime. Sophomore Kylie Fisher scored the golden goal with a 25 yard strike.
Northwestern is 4-0-1 to start the season, the third-longest unbeaten streak to open a year in program history, behind a nine-game run in 2016 and a ten-game run in 1998.
The Wildcat defense is in the middle of the fifth-longest shutout streak in program history at 431:47 minutes. The team has only conceded once in five games, and its goal-against-average of .184 ranks sixth nationally.
First year goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood has logged four shutouts in five games, and is tied for third among all goalkeepers nationally in shutouts. She earned Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week on Aug. 27 for her two shutouts against Iowa State and No. 25 West Virginia.
The 'Cats have also had 11 unique players collect a point this season through five games, with no player recording multiple assists or goals except for senior Brenna Lovera, who has one of each.
NU and Loyola Marymount have only met once on the pitch, which came last year in a 2-2 draw on the road. Marisa Viggiano and Lovera scored for the Wildcats as they battled from behind twice to take a point. The 'Cats and Falcons will be playing against each other for the first time ever on Sunday.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Loyola Marymount
The Lions are 2-3-1 to start the season with wins against Loyola (Chicago) and Northeastern. The Lions lost 3-0 to No. 11 Texas A&M and are coming off a tough weekend with losses to UC Irvine and Indiana.
Jalyn Lupo and Sarina Bolden lead Loyola Marymount so far with 2 goals and 1 assist each, with Lupo mainly coming off the bench.
Loyola Marymount was picked to finish fifth this year in the WCC and senior midfielder Emma Tyrnauer was named to the Preseason All-WCC Team. Last year, the Lions finished 9-7-4 and 4-4-1 in the WCC
Bowling Green
The Falcons are 1-1-1 to start the season with a season-opening draw against Loyola Marymount, an overtime loss to Hawaii and win against Oakland. Last time out, they were leading Valpo 1-0 when the match was canceled due to lightning late in the first half.
Nikki Cox leads Bowing Green with two goals on six shots. Erica Hubert returns as a first team All-MAC selection after scoring 12 goals last season while Alexis Frickle mad the second team last year.
The Falcons were picked to finish third in the MAC in this year's preseason coaches poll. Last year Bowling Green was picked to finish last in the East division and went on to post a 13-7-1 record while finishing second in the MAC and advancing to the conference tournament final.
