Lumsden Qualifies for 2018 U.S. Open

COLUMBUS, Ohio — With a 6-under performance at U.S. Open sectional qualifying, Northwestern junior Ryan Lumsden earned a spot at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, June 14-17.
The London, England, native will be entered as an amateur in the 156-player field for the 118th running of the U.S. Open. Lumsden is the ninth Wildcat golfer to play in the U.S. Open in the last 20 years and is expected to join former NU golfer Matt Fitzpatrick, who received an exemption through his OWGR ranking.
He will be the fourth Northwestern golfer to compete as an amateur in the last 20 years as well, joining Fitzpatrick (2014), Dillon Dougherty (2006), and Erik Ciotti (1999).
This qualification caps off a remarkable run for the Northwestern student-athlete. He paced the Wildcats at the NCAA Regionals — also in Columbus, Ohio — with a fourth-place finish and helped lift the team to the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career. His first-round, 5-under 67 at Karsten Creek at the NCAA Championships helped propel NU to a 16th-place finish at the event, Northwestern's best result since 2000.
The owner of the third-best career scoring average in program history was the only amateur to advance from his sectional qualifying location and was two strokes better than the next-closest amateur.
