Northwestern Set for NCAA Championships in Stillwater
5/23/2018 2:31:00 PM | Men's Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. — Northwestern is set for the NCAA Division I Championships, which take place May 25-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club.
The event features a field of the best 30 collegiate squads and is hosted this year by Oklahoma State. The 7,449-yard, par-72 Karsten Creek is home to the Cowboys during the regular season.
The tournament begins with three rounds (54 holes) of stroke play beginning on Friday, May 25, and the #B1GCats will have to finish among the top-15 teams to advance.
The 'Cats start play at 8:17 a.m. CT from the first tee on Friday and are paired with Oregon and North Carolina State. Paired with the same schools on Saturday, NU will start from the 10th tee at 1:37 p.m. CT.
A final round of stroke play, with the top-15 teams and nine individuals from non-advancing teams, will be held on Monday, May 28, with the top-eight teams advancing to match play. The individual champion will also be named after the close of Monday's competition.
The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, May 29, followed by finals on Wednesday, May 30.
Northwestern's best finish at the NCAA Championships in recent history came in 1999 with a third-place finish under head coach Pat Goss. The Wildcats were led by future World No. 1 Luke Donald, who won the NCAA Championships as an individual that year.
In all, this will be Northwestern's 25th trip to the NCAA Championships in program history.
In order to find success, Chicago's Big Ten Team will look to senior Dylan Wu, whose name is on almost every record book page for the Wildcats but is getting his first shot at the NCAA Championships. Additionally, few golfers are hotter right now than junior Ryan Lumsden, whom Northwestern will also look toward as a key contributor. The London, England, native finished tied for fourth-place overall at NCAA Regionals, finishing off with a 5-under 66 in the final round.
Golf Channel will have extensive coverage of the Men's Golf Championships. Live coverage begins on Monday, May 28 from 3-7 p.m. CT featuring the final round of stroke play and the awarding of the individual medalist honors. Coverage continues on Tuesday, May 29, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CT with the quarterfinals of match play and returns for the match play semifinals from 3-7 p.m. CT. Coverage culminates with the championship match on Wednesday, May 30 from 3-7 p.m. CT.
