Wildcats Fall to No. 11 Wolverines

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern battled hard but could not keep up with No. 11 Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Combe Tennis Center.
All three doubles matches were close early, but the Wolverines pulled away at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the first team point. The No. 3 matchup was tied 5-5 and went unfinished.
In singles play, the 'Cats faced a Michigan lineup that boasted three nationally-ranked players. At the No. 1 spot, NU's Dominik Stary took on the best of the three, No. 7 Alex Knight. In an exciting, back-and-forth first set, the two were tied at 6-6 and went to a tiebreaker. Stary took it up a notch with the set on the line, winning all seven points in the tiebreaker to take the upper hand against the seventh-ranked Wolverine.
Despite Stary's performance, the visitors were able to close out the match with wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5, including a victory from No. 34 Leo Hua and another from No. 118 Myles Schalet. Chris Ephron won the first set at No. 6 but his match went unfinished in the second, as did the contest at No. 4 singles.
With the defeat, Northwestern drops to 9-12 on the year, while Michigan improves to an impressive 16-4.
Next up for Chicago's Big Ten Team will be a trip to Penn State on Friday, April 13, with a start time still to be determined.
