Northwestern threated in the first when Sabrina Rabin walked and stole second before, one out later, Morgan Nelson reached on a fielder's choice grounder and also stole second to give the Wildcats two runners in scoring position with one out. Iowa's ace Allison Doocy retired the next two #B1GCats to plate, however, to end the inning with nobody across.
Iowa struck for a pair in the second, getting runners on with a walk and a fielder's choice. Northwestern starter Morgan Newport fanned one batter and got a foul out for a second out, but a two-out triple plated both to give the Hawkeyes the first lead in the game, 2-0.
Later, in the top of the third, a leadoff single came around to score an unearned run after an error and pinch hit two-out single for the Hawkeyes, extending Iowa's lead to 3-0.
Northwestern got regular base runners through the middle innings but struggled to string together hits. Rachel Lewis crushed a two-out double in the third, Marissa Panko was hit by a pitch in the fourth, and Brooke Marquez singled before a Lewis walk in the sixth, but each time the Wildcats could not cash in on RBI situations.
Meanwhile, Newport in the circle fought through the afternoon to keep Iowa from growing its lead. She fanned a batter looking to strand a pair in the fourth, and Northwestern benefited from a couple of trail-runner outs to end the fifth and seventh innings on over-aggressive Iowa base running.
In the bottom of the seventh, NU was unable to summon the magic that had produced four seventh-inning comeback wins in Big Ten play this season.
Newport (11-6) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
