EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern is set for a busy weekend, hosting No. 6 Illinois in the Big Ten opener Friday evening before facing Indiana and UIC in a Sunday doubleheader. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CT on Friday, while the Sunday matches will take place at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. All three matches will be held at Combe Tennis Center.
The 'Cats are coming off a narrow, 4-3 loss at Harvard last time out. NU won the doubles point to take an early lead and also got wins from Chris Ephron and Ben Vandixhorn in singles play. The score was tied 3-3 and came down to the final set at No. 2 singles, but the Crimson were able to pull off the win.
The sixth-ranked Illini currently boast an 8-4 mark on the year and have recorded five wins over ranked teams, while three of their four losses have come to opponents ranked in the top seven nationally. Most recently, Illinois tallied home wins over TCU and Virginia last weekend. In 106 all-time meetings, Illinois has a 65-39 lead over the 'Cats in wins, with two contests ending in ties.
Indiana enters the weekend with an 8-6 record, falling to Drake in its last appearance. The Hoosiers and Wildcats have faced off 87 times in their program history, with Northwestern winning 47 times to hold the advantage, including a 4-2 triumph over IU in Bloomington last year.
UIC currently sits at 2-5, having picked up back-to-back wins after dropping its first five. The Flames beat Chicago State and Eastern Illinois in a doubleheader on March 3. In 20 previous meetings with UIC, Northwestern is a perfect 20-0.
Chicago's Big Ten Team has won its home conference opener in each of the past three campaigns, including a 4-3 victory over then-No. 8 Illinois in March of 2016. NU has faced the Illini to open Big Ten play in each season since 2011.
