EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 11 Northwestern opened up Big Ten play on the right foot, cruising past Michigan, 16-7, at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium on Friday night.
Senior midfielder Sheila Nesselbush led the way with her second hat trick of the season while adding two assists and two draw controls. The game was Nesselbush's sixth multi-point game in 2018.
Junior Selena Lasota, senior Danita Stroup, sophomore Megan Kinna and junior Holly Korn each tallied two goals in the romp, with Korn adding an assist.
Senior Shelby Fredericks stuffed the box score with three assists, two ground balls and two draw controls. First year Taylor Pinzone led the Wildcats with three draw controls while also chipping in a goal.
Julie Krupnick played 47 minutes in the net and made seven saves. In just 13 minutes between the pipes, Mallory Weisse chipped in six saves to complete a solid defensive performance for Northwestern.
From the first draw, the 'Cats jumped on the Wolverines, scoring first through Sheila Nesselbush. After the visitors responded, NU ripped off three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead.
After Michigan made it 5-2, first year Lauren Gilbert scooped up the ensuing draw control and ran it half the length of the field before finishing off her spectacular solo effort with a low strike.
Stroup and Nesselbush added two more shortly after to make it 7-2.
Lasota was face guarded for most of the night, but received a pass in transition with eight minutes to play. She sliced through the heart of the defense and rifled home a jumping effort that froze the Wolverine keeper to make it 8-3.
Starting at the end of the first half and continuing 12 minutes into the second, the Wildcats embarked on a 7-0 run to put the game to bed at 15-4. Kinna and Korn added their two goals each during the run, including a thunderbolt from beyond the eight-meter line from Kinna to make it 12-4.
With the clock running, Michigan responded with three goals before first year Kate Copeland finished the night with a free position shot for her second goal of the season.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Monday, when it welcomes No. 7 Syracuse to Evanston for another marquee matchup at Martin Stadium. First draw is set for 1 p.m.
