EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 12 Northwestern notched its second ranked win of the season on Monday, defeating No. 11 Syracuse, 14-10, at Martin Stadium behind career-days from Julie Krupnick and Sheila Nesselbush.
Krupnick, the redshirt first-year goalkeeper, matched her career high with 12 saves on 22 shots faced, stymying the Orange.
Senior midfielder Sheila Nesselbush followed up her season-high four goals at Michigan with a career-high five goals and an assist against Syracuse, along with two ground balls and two draw controls. Nesselbush has tallied 11 points over her last two games and 19 over her last five.
Senior attack Selena Lasota chipped in with a hat trick, her sixth of the season. Classmate Shelby Fredericks continued her domination of draw controls with 13, matching her season high, while guiding Northwestern to an 18-8 edge overall in draw controls.
Northwestern improved to 7-3 in 2018, and improved its home record against Syracuse to 7-0 all-time.
The Orange jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in a defensive, slow-paced game, but a two-minute advantage gave Northwestern its window back. Junior attacker Holly Korn finished off a nice pass from first year Meghan Duffy to make it 3-1, where the score remained until there was ten minutes left in the half.
After trading goals to make it 4-2, Northwestern finished the half on a clutch 3-0 run.
Nesselbush scored her first of the game with three and a half minutes to go before junior Claire Quinn followed thirty seconds later with a crafty dodge and goal of her own. After a save from Krupnick with 28 seconds left, the 'Cats raced down the field and earned a free-position shot, which Nesselbush converted with nine seconds left to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.
Syracuse tied the game at 5-5 out of the break, but the 'Cats went on a five-goal run fueled by a Lasota hat trick and never looked back. Lasota caused a turnover off of Asa Goldstock, the Syracuse keeper, right in front of the cage, and then finished from point-blank range to make it 7-5.
Lasota later used the increased space on an advantage to fire home from the middle of the fan. She then one-upped herself and scored on a late-clock isolation while Chicago's Big Ten Team was a player down to make it 9-5. Korn completed the run with her second goal of the afternoon to push the lead to 10-5.
Syracuse cut the deficit to 11-8, but Northwestern kept the Orange at bay thanks to a nifty assist from Korn to first year Taylor Pinzone. Sophomore Megan Kinna scored her eighth goal of the season on an assist from Nesselbush to restore the lead back to five.
The Orange made one last push in the dying stages and trailed 13-10, but Northwestern managed the game out with Nesselbush's last goal and sixth point of the day to seal the contest.
The Wildcats are back in action on Friday, when it starts a two-game road swing at Johns Hopkins. First draw is set for 2 pm.
