
Four Wildcats Set for NCAA Wrestling Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, this weekend for the 2018 NCAA Championships. The three-day tournament will begin Thursday morning at 11 a.m. CT and will conclude with the finals Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.
The second round (March 15) and semifinals (March 16) will be broadcast on prime-time television by ESPN, with the championship (March 17) featured on ESPN2. The day-time first round (March 15), quarterfinals (March 16), and medal round (March 17) can be found on ESPNU.
Throughout the entire three days, during all six sessions, ESPN3 streams every single mat and match, allowing #B1GCats fans to follow all of the Northwestern action. This feature is available on the web and on the ESPN app.
Four Wildcats earned automatic bids to compete in Cleveland, where two Wildcat rookies will be joined by a pair of juniors. No. 8 Sebastian Rivera (125) finished fifth in his first conference championships, while fellow first year No. 5 Ryan Deakin (149) finished sixth, as both wrestled their way into the NCAA field of 33.
In addition to the newcomers, No. 18 Johnny Sebastian (174) and No. 17 Conan Jennings (285) will each be making their second-straight appearance at the event. Sebastian placed fourth in the Big Ten to qualify in a run that included a win over No. 14 Dylan Lydy. Jennings picked up two ranked wins on his way to finishing fifth, taking down No. 20 Shawn Streck and then-No. 6 Youssif Hemida.
Rivera earned the 10th seed in his weight class and will pair with unseeded Ibrahim Bunduka of George Mason in the opening round. The highest-seeded NU grappler in the event, No. 7 seed Deakin, will battle against Frank Garcia of Binghamton to kick off the tournament. Sebastian will wrestle against (15) Dylan Lydy of Purdue for the fourth time this season, and Jennings is pitted against (15) Thomas Haines of Lock Haven.
