DURHAM, N.C. – Northwestern took on No. 19 Duke Sunday afternoon, falling to the Blue Devils at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
The hosts got the match underway with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to clinch the first team point. NU's pair of first years in Antonioni Fasano and Nick Brookes were locked in a 5-5 contest at No. 2, but the set went unfinished.
In singles competition, Duke quickly doubled its lead with a win from No. 48 Nicolas Alvarez. The Blue Devils added a win at No. 3 when Nick Stachowiak defeated Nick Brookes, as the Wildcat first year suffered his first loss of the 2018 campaign.
Duke needed just one win from the remaining four matches, but the 'Cats put up a strong fight. Dominik Stary won his first set at No. 2 singles over Catalin Mateas, while Ben Vandixhorn also took the first frame in his match against Sean Sculley at No. 4.
Before either could close out a win for NU, however, No. 90 Robert Levine finished off a win at No. 6 singles to seal a 4-0 win for the Blue Devils. Jason Seidman's match at No. 5 singles went unfished in the midst of a first-set tiebreaker.
The loss drops Chicago's Big Ten Team to 2-3 on the season, while 19th-ranked Duke improves to 4-1.
Northwestern will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 9 when the Wildcats face Oklahoma State at 5 p.m. CT. The match in Stillwater, Okla. will be the last of five straight tilts away from home for NU.
