CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Northwestern played its second tightly-contested match of the weekend Sunday afternoon, this time in Cambridge, Mass. when it visited Harvard for the final nonconference tilt before Big Ten play.
The 'Cats got wins from two doubles pairs as well as from Chris Ephron and Ben Vandixhorn in singles, but could not hold off the Crimson as they fell, 4-3, in a match that came down to the final set.
NU was off to a positive start when Dominik Stary and Vandixhorn defeated Kenny Tao and Logan Weber at No. 1 doubles. Antonioni Fasano and Ephron then took down their opponents at No. 3 doubles to give the first team point of the match to the visitors.
In singles competition, Northwestern quickly doubled its lead with a win from Ephron at No. 6. The sophomore cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win to solidify a perfect record on the day.
The hosts then tied the match at two apiece with wins at No. 5 and No. 3 before Vandixhorn added another for the 'Cats. Coming off the back of a victory on Friday at No. 4 singles against Vanderbilt, junior followed it up with another hard-fought victory. Vandixhorn dropped the first set before winning 7-5 in a close second, and finished off the performance with a dominant, 6-2 final frame.
After a close, three-set win at No. 1 for Harvard, the match came down to the lone remaining singles match at No. 2. The Crimson's Andy Zhou took the first set, 7-5, before first year Nick Brookes prevailed in the second by the same scoreline. With it all coming down to the final set of the contest, Zhou came out on top to give the hosts a seventh straight home win on the campaign.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action on Friday, March 9 when it opens conference play with a match against Illinois in Evanston.
