COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northwestern first-year Calypso Sheridan set her second school record in as many days at the Big Ten Championships Thursday as the Northwestern Wildcats held steady in seventh place among the 13 teams at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavillion.
The Wildcats finished Thursday night with 164 team points, giving them a 16-point cushion over eighth-place Penn State.
Sheridan just narrowly missed qualifying for the championship final in the 200 individual medley Thursday morning, but turned around and improved her time in the evening. The Brisbane, Australia, native finished second in the 'B final' and 10th overall, touching the wall in an NCAA 'B' cut time and school record of 1:57.60.
Junior Olivia Rosendahl also pulled in 26 team points for Chicago's Big Ten Team with a fourth-place finish in the 1M springboard. Rosendahl, the defending national champion on the platform, scored a 327.55 in the final Thursday evening, just missing out on a bronze medal by less than three points.
Senior Mary Warren put together her strongest showing of the season in Thursday night's 50 free final to finish sixth in the 'B final' and 14th overall. Warren qualified for the consolation final in the morning with a 22.63, but ticked it up a notch in the evening with a NCAA 'B' cut of 22.59 to score 13 team points for the 'Cats.
The 400 medley relay team of first years Sheridan and Sophie Angus, sophomore Krystal Lara and senior Anna Keane finished ninth with a 3:38.11. The time ranks second on NU's Top Performers list all time.
Eleven other 'Cats competed for Northwestern in this morning's prelims. First year Rachel Tseng, senior Aja Malone and sophomore Irune Andres all swam career-bests for Northwestern in the 500 free. In the 200 IM, first year Sophie Angus, junior Alex Grimes and first year Ilektra Lebl all put in career-best efforts as well.
