COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Northwestern women's swimming and diving program opened the 2018 Big Ten Championships with a major splash Wednesday night, setting a school record in the 200-yard medley relay.
The relay squad of first-years Calypso Sheridan, Sophie Angus, Ilektra Lebl and senior Mary Warren finished opened the championships with a sixth-place finish in the event, touching the wall in 1:38.44.
Sheridan opened the relay with a 24.88 in the backstroke and Angus put together a 27.18 split in breaststroke. Lebl kep the strong performance going with a 23.50 in the fly and Warren cruised in with a split of 22.20 to put an exclamation point on the school-best mark.
The 800 freestyle relay team of sophomores Krystal Lara and Malorie Han, first year Rachel Tseng and senior Anna Keane also raced Wednesday night, finishing ninth with a time of 7:08.87. Keane had an impressive start to her final Big Ten Championships, anchoring the relay with a blistering 1:45.44.
The Wildcats sit in seventh place after the first night of competition with 88 points, just six points shy of sixth-place Penn State. Thursday's schedule includes the 1-meter diving competition, 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 free and 400 medley relay. The second day of competition will being with preliminaries at 10 a.m. The finals will begin at 5:30 p.m.
