COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Former Northwestern walk-on turned standout Reggie Hearn was announced as the 2018 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year. Hearn was member of two USA Basketball Men's World Cup Qualifying Teams in 2018 and the November 2017 MWCQ team.

With those three USA teams, Hearn helped USA Basketball to a 5-1 record as the USA continues its quest to qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Additionally, Hearn was one of just three USA World Cup Qualifying Team alumni to be invited to take part in the 2018 USA Basketball Men's National Team minicamp in Las Vegas.

"It was completely unexpected and kind of came out of nowhere," Hearn said. "Just to see that I'm included amongst that group (Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kyrie Irving, Jameel Warney) is an incredible honor and something I never thought I'd be able to experience. This award goes to me in name, but I want to thank all those people without whom I wouldn't be here and thank Jesus who created me and created this opportunity for me."

Overall, Hearn has been a member of four of the five USA World Cup Qualifying teams that have been comprised of G League players, and he was a part of the 5-0 2017 USA AmeriCup Team. He has ranked among the USA's top four scorers in each of the four completed competitions.

"Reggie continues to demonstrate his commitment to USA Basketball and his passion for playing basketball," said USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley. "He has been an outstanding contributor on the court and has proven himself a true leader for coach Van Gundy and the USA World Cup Qualifying teams. We truly are grateful for his commitment, and we are proud to celebrate his contributions."
