'Cats Sweep Home Opener with 28 Individual Wins

Evanston, Ill. - Northwestern swimming and diving brought home the win against a trio of local foes at Norris Aquatics Center Friday evening. The men's team dominated their tri-dual meet with Northwestern beating Chicago 204-76 and Northwestern beating UIC 198 -95. The women also led the night from start to finish with Northwestern beating Illinois, UIC and Chicago 190-105, 200-93 and 206-85 respectively. The Wildcats took the top spot in 28 of the 32 events, with swimmers in at least the top three in every contest they competed in.
The meet started off on a high note, with 1-2 sweeps of both the men's and women's 200 medley relays. Sophomores Calypso Sheridan and Sophie Angus, junior Malorie Han, and first year Miriam Guevara touched the wall in 1:40.99 to win it for the women's squad. Seniors Will Hofstadter and Arjun Sharma, sophomore Peter Lewczyk, and first year Andrew Zhang took first place for the men with a time of 1:31.54.
Adding on to their early lead, the 'Cats swept the top spots in two events. In the men's 100 back, Zhang finished his laps in 49.73, with first year Peter Gridley and senior Jack Thorne following close behind. The women's squad one-upped this impressive victory in the next event, the 100 breast, with 'Cats in every spot of the top four. Angus took home the win with a time of 1:02.61, first year Tara Vovk took second, sophomore Becky Kamau grabbed third, and senior Lindsay Adamski finished out in fourth.
Hofstadter highlighted the men's team's successes with two individual event wins, in addition to his relay contribution. With a time of 56.23, Hofstadter nabbed first in the 100 breast and in the 200 breast he touched the wall in 2:06.74.
Angus added on to her two wins with a third first place finish, the most for the women's squad. Her third victory came in the 200 breast, with a time of 2:16.83.
Northwestern also dominated the diving boards. Reigning national champ Olivia Rosendahl bested her 1M competition by over 40 points with a score of 302.10, and took home her second victory of the meet with 314.45 points in the 3M. Senior Eryn Scannell had the second highest total in the 1M with 278.80 points. On the 1M board, the men swept the top three spots, with first year Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson taking the top spot with a score of 319.90, fellow first year Evan Labuda taking second, and senior Ben Magliato coming in third. Eskrick-Parkison nabbed first place in the 1M as well.
The Wildcats return to the pool November 9/10 as they face off against Princeton in a two-day dual meet. The 'Cats will be back at Norris Aquatics Center the following weekend for the TYR Invitational.
