‘Cats wrap up first day of competition at Big Al Invite highlighted by wins and season bests

 The Wildcats wrapped up their first day of competition at the Big Al Invitational with multiple top five finishes, season bests, individual wins and an impressive showing from dominant first years.  
 
First years Andrew Zhang and Miriam Guevara both brought home individual wins, Zhang with a season best in the 100 back (48.87) and Guevara in the 100 fly with a time of 54.86, which was also a season best. Senior Alex Grimes and first year Jasmine Hellmer finished the 100 fly in fourth and fifth respectively, giving the cats three top five finishes in the race.
 
First year Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson took to the diving board to bring home two second place finishes in the platform and 1 meter scoring 280.40 and 307.95 points for each.
 
The 'Cats had a host of second place finishes on the night with junior Malorie Han finishing in 23.41 in the 50 free, first year Tara Vovk touching the wall in a season best 2:03.63 in the 200 IM, Sophie Angus finishing in 1:03.13 in the 100 breast, first year Emma Theobald securing a season best 55.24 in the 100 back and sophomore Liam Gately in the 200 free (1:38.32). 
 
The Wildcats also had a strong relay day on both the men's and women's side. Starting with a second place finish in the 200 free, the team of Hellmer, Lara, Han and Vovk touched the wall in a time of 1:34.36 giving the 'Cats a solids start to the day. The women's team also dominated the 400 and 200 medley relays with first places finishes in both. Guevara, Angus, Hellmer and Lara touched the wall in 3:43.70 in the 400 medley and the team of Guevara, Angus, Hellmer and Han were able to hold off the competition to secure the win in the 200 medley in 1:41.92.
 
The Wildcats wrapped up the evening session with a couple of third place finishes in the 800 free relays for both teams. The men's teams of Liam Gately, Peter Lewczyk, Robert Cecil and Ryan Gridley finished in a time of 6:43.65 and the women's team of Hellmer, Tseng, Han and Lara finished in 7:28.89. The men's and women's teams are sitting third and second overall respectively going into the final day of competition.
 
Northwestern will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. ET at DeNuzio Pool.
