No. 10 Northwestern Holds Off No. 19 Rutgers for 3-2 Win

9/29/2017 7:49:00 PM | Field Hockey

Wildcats improve to 3-1 in Big Ten play

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 10 Northwestern never trailed and held on late to hand 19th-ranked Rutgers its first Big Ten loss of the season, 3-2, Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

The Wildcats (8-4, 3-1 B1G) improve to a perfect 5-0 at home with the victory.

NU dominated possession throughout the first half but Rutgers did well to limit the Wildcats' scoring opportunities inside the circle.

Northwestern managed seven of the match's eight shots over the opening 35 minutes of play and the lone penalty corner opportunity. The corner proved to be the difference as Puck Pentenga knocked a shot past Gianna Glatz at 21:11 to put the hosts in front 1-0. Sophia Miller and Kirsten Mansfield were credited with assists on the play.

Rutgers was more aggressive to open the second half, but NU was able to maintain its lead before eventually building upon it at 50:31. The 'Cats created a turnover in the midfield and some accurate passing led to Pascale Massey finding Saar de Breij alone at the post for her fourth goal of the year, making it a 2-0 game.

Rutgers refused to go away as Linde van Schaik tallied a goal off a corner at 56:21 to cut NU's lead in half. Northwestern regained the two-goal margin just over five minutes later when Elena Curley beat Glatz with a bouncing shot from the top of the circle off a corner.

There was still 6:21 remaining when Kerrie Burns deflected in a shot off a corner to make it a one-goal game again. Rutgers pulled Glatz for an extra attacker with 1:35 left, but Northwestern was able to hold the Scarlet Knights at bay to earn the win.

The Wildcats finished with a 14-7 edge in shots and 7-2 advantage in corners.

Northwestern returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6 when it hosts Indiana at Lakeside Field.
