No. 10 Northwestern Rolls On, Defeating Indiana 4-1
10/6/2017 7:36:00 PM | Field Hockey
EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 10 Northwestern won for the seventh time in its last eight matches and remained in contention for a Big Ten title with a 4-1 win over Indiana Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats improve to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten with the victory, keeping them one game behind Michigan for first place in the conference standings.
Northwestern dominated the action in the opening half as it allowed only one shot by the Hoosiers while recording 11 itself.
Saar de Breij got the hosts on the board first at 12:06, depositing a rebound of a save off the initial shot of a penalty corner to put the hosts up 1-0.
For all of NU's dominance over the opening 35 minutes of play, it appeared as though it may have to settle for a one-goal advantage at the intermission. However, the 'Cats earned a corner as the first half expired and they cashed in with Lily Gandhi putting home a rebound past Katie Johnson for her first goal of the season, providing Northwestern with an insurance goal.
With Indiana pushing forward as the clock ticked under 11 minutes remaining, the Wildcats took advantage of a counter attack to put the game away. Pascale Massey made a long run, eventually drawing Johnson and a pair of defender before sliding a pass to a waiting Elena Curley at the goalline for a tap-in to make it 3-0.
The Hoosiers ruined the shutout with a goal by Claire Woods off a penalty corner with 6:10 left and the guests opted to pull Johnson from goal for an extra attacker.
Northwestern took advantage just under two minutes later as Massey dribbled in the circle and fired a shot home for her team-leading sixth goal of the year to finish the scoring at 65:39.
NU finished the match with a 21-6 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corners. Indiana's Maddie Latino entered the match among the league leaders with eight goals, but Northwestern's defense clamped down to hold her without a single shot.
The Wildcats return to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when they step outside league play, traveling to Ball State.
