Late Goal Lifts No. 3 Penn State Past No. 14 Northwestern, 4-3

9/22/2017 5:50:00 PM | Field Hockey

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- No. 14 Northwestern rallied back from a two-goal deficit in the second half to tie the game, but third-ranked Penn State got a late goal to escape with a 4-3 win Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions were able to get on the board first, tallying a goal at 4:40. Shea Cannon put the hosts in front off an assist from Gini Bramley.

Northwestern was able to withstand five penalty corners by Penn State in the opening half before converting on its fourth corner of the period. Puck Pentenga leveled the score when she knocked home her third goal of the season off assists from Eva van Agt and Kirsten Manfield at 29:11.

The Nittany Lions finished the opening half with a 10-8 edge in shots while both teams had five corners.

Penalty corners ultimately proved to be the Wildcats' undoing. Penn State scored twice on corners in the opening 11 minutes of the second half as Moira Putsch and Aurelia Meijer both scored to put the hosts up 3-1.

Northwestern refused to go away, though. With 12:35 remaining, Eva van Agt finished off a nice combination of passes when she finished at the post past Jenny Rizzo to make it 3-2.

The Wildcats made it all the way back just over six minutes later when van Agt's original shot was saved and Pascale Massey dove to knock the ball over the goalline.

The contest was headed in the direction of overtime, but Penn State took advantage of one more corner opportunity and Putsch scored her second of the game with only 1:36 remaining to give the Nittany Lions the win.

Northwestern (6-4, 1-1 B1G) returns to action at noon Central time Sunday when it travels to Maryland to take on the 10th-ranked Terrapins.
