Massey leads Wildcats with two goals
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 14 Northwestern earned a resume-building win Sunday, rallying from a goal down in the second half to defeat 10th-ranked Maryland.
Pascale Massey scored two goals to lead the Wildcats (7-4, 2-1 B1G).
"Today's match was a battle between two great Big Ten teams," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "We needed to play a full 70 minutes and we had a great team effort. We were able to execute our corners and that became the difference in the game."
Coming off a narrow 4-3 loss at third-ranked Penn State on Friday and playing its third top-15 opponent of the week, Northwestern set the tone early.
The Wildcats came ready to play with Saar de Breij earning a penalty corner two and a half minutes into the contest. NU was able to convert with Massey deflecting home Puck Pentenga's hit from the top of the circle to make it 1-0.
Northwestern maintained the advantage through the majority of the first half until Maryland tied it on a goal by Brooke Adler at 25:32. The teams carried the tie halftime after each team posted seven shots over the opening 35 minutes of play.
A defensive miscue by the Wildcats allowed the hosts to take the lead 3:36 into the second half. Northwestern failed to clear a loose ball in front of the cage and Lein Holsboer finished it, giving Maryland a 2-1 advantage.
Northwestern was able to hang tough, though. Off a penalty corner, Sarah Holliday was able to save Pentenga's initial shot before Massey knocked in the rebound while lying on the ground to tie the score.
The 'Cats took advantage of yet another corner opportunity in scoring the decisive goal. Kirsten Mansfield inserted and then deflected in Pentenga's hit, giving Northwestern the 3-2 advantage at 54:21.
Maryland opted to pull Holliday for an extra attacker with 5:20 remaining in the contest. The Terrapins had a shot go off the outside of the post with a little over three minutes left and Northwestern stopped a penalty-corner opportunity in the final minute as the Wildcats earned their third win over a ranked opponent this season.
Maryland finished with a slim 16-15 edge in shots while the Wildcats had a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. Annie Kalfas recorded three saves to earn the win in goal.
Northwestern returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday when it hosts No. 23 Rutgers at Lakeside Field.
