Northwestern Earns Key 2-0 Victory Over Louisville

9/19/2017 5:15:00 PM | Field Hockey

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Kirsten Mansfield scored a goal in each half and No. 14 Northwestern ran its winning streak to four with a 2-0 shutout of 15th-ranked Louisville Tuesday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

The contest opened up a big week for the Wildcats (6-3) who will trek to third-ranked Penn State on Friday and 10th-ranked Maryland on Sunday.

Northwestern and Louisville have battled for NCAA tournament at-large bids in recent years with the Cardinals regularly having the upper hand due to head-to-head wins over the Wildcats. However, the Wildcats made a statement and added a resume-building win Tuesday.

The Cardinals (4-4) were the early aggressors, but the 'Cats were able to hold off a trio of penalty corners over the first seven minutes of the contest, including one shot that banged off the post. Northwestern turned the tables from there, though.

NU's swarming midfield pressured Louisville the rest of the way and dominated possession. The Wildcats eventually cashed in at 24:11 when Puck Pentenga's hit from the top of the circle off a corner found Mansfield on the doorstep for a tip in to make it 1-0.

Northwestern carried the one-goal lead into halftime after posting a 9-7 edge in shots with both teams recording four penalty corners.

The Wildcats carried the momentum into the second half as it continued to clamp down on the Cardinals. NU delivered a key insurance goal at 42:50 when Pentenga and Manfield teamed up in a goal that mirrored their first. It was Mansfield's team-leading fourth goal of the season and Pentenga's team-leading eighth assist.

Northwestern's midfield and defense refused to let Louisville back in the game, holding the guests to four shots in the second half.

NU finished with an 18-11 advantage in shots, including a game-high eight by Pentenga. The Wildcats held an 8-1 edge in corners over the final 35 minutes of play to finish with a 12-5 advantage in the category.
