Northwestern Drops Series Opener to Iowa
4/7/2017 7:01:00 PM | Baseball
Evanston, Ill. – Jake Schieber had a career high four hits in four at-bats, adding a double, but Northwestern fell to Iowa in the series operner, 14-2.
Northwestern (8-20, 0-4 B1G) put together four hits in the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough against an Iowa (19-9, 3-1 B1G) team that recorded 11 in the contest.
The Wildcats were looking for their third straight win at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park. They threatened to get off to a hot start when Schieber and Jack Dunn reached on singles in the third inning, but weren't able to manufacture a run.
After starter Tommy Bordignon got touched up for five runs in two innings, Cooper Wetherbee gave a solid bullpen performance. The Senior lefty struck out one, while allowing two runs on four hits in three innings pitched.
Lefty relievers continued their good day when Richard Fordon replaced Wetherbee in the sixth inning. The junior had a career high four strikeouts in his two-innings pitched, allowing one run on four hits.
While the Hawkeyes used a seven run eighth inning to claim a 14-0 lead, Northwestern did damage of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Schieber and Mat Jones each singled to the left side, before Schieber advanced to third on a Dunn grounder. Matt Hopfner grounded to short, but Dunn beat the throw to second, with all runners safe and the Wildcats claiming their first run. Erro then singled to load the bases with one out, followed by a Hoscheit sac fly to make it 14-2.
Tyler Lass made his seventh relief appearance of the year, recording a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless inning. The Wildcats put a pair of runners on in the ninth, but were unable to claw any further back, dropping game one of the three game set.
Northwestern will host Iowa again Saturday, April 8, at 2 p.m., before finishing off the three game set Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
