MADISON, Wis. – Northwestern senior Strong Kirchheimer reached a milestone with career singles win No. 100 on Friday night at Wisconsin. Kirchheimer is just the fifth player in program history to reach the century mark in singles wins and the first to do so since Doug Bohaboy in 1999.
His 6-4, 6-4 win over Lamar Remy at No. 1 was his team-leading 21st victory of the season. Kirchheimer is currently chasing Ry Tarpley (1994-98) for fourth on the all-time wins list. Tarpley finished his career with 102. Steve Herdoiza (1987-91) is the career leader with 118 singles wins in his illustrious career.
Kirchheimer is closing in on another career milestone as well. With 68 doubles wins to his name, the senior needs just one more to tie Adam Schaechterle (2002-06) atop the all-time leaderboard and two more doubles wins to become Northwestern's all-time leader.
The 30th-ranked Badgers (13-2, 4-0), playing at home, pulled out a narrow 4-2 victory over the No. 19 Wildcats (14-7, 2-2).
Wisconsin won the doubles point to start off the match with a pair of victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Lamar Remy and Chase Colton paired up to beat Ben Vandixhorn and Konrad Zieba at No. 2 by a 6-4 margin, and Osgar O'Hoisin and John Zordani won by the same score over Michael Lorenzini and Chris Ephron at No. 3.
True freshman Dominik Stary got the Wildcats on the board first in singles with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set win over Osgar O'Hoisin at No. 3. The win moved Stary to 16-8 in his first collegiate season and 4-2 in the third spot in the lineup.
Wisconsin rattled off three straight wins after that to clinch the match, picking up victories at No. 4 (6-3, 6-4), No. 6 (6-2, 7-6) and No. 2 (6-2, 6-2). Kirchheimer finished the evening with his win at No. 1. Jason Seidman's match at No. 5 went unfinished with him leading 7-6, 2-2.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will stay on the road to play another Big Ten contender when it travels to Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Sunday to take on No. 33 Minnesota (13-4, 2-0).
