Northwestern Gets B1G Road Win at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Northwestern picked up a big road win in conference play with a dramatic 4-2 victory over Minnesota on Sunday. Senior Konrad Zieba put the No. 19 Wildcats over the top with a long third set tiebreak win at No. 2.
The 53-ranked Zieba beat Felix Corwin, 9-7, in the final frame to secure a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7) win. Zieba is now 16-7 in 2017.
Northwestern improved to 15-7 (3-2) with the win.
The 'Cats dominated in doubles, led by its No. 1 tandem of Strong Kirchheimer and Dominik Starý. The 55th-ranked duo cruised by No. 69 Matic Spec and Felix Corwin, 6-1, to improve to 15-3 on the season. Konrad Zieba and Ben Vandixhorn then took care of business at No. 2, winning 6-2, to give the Wildcats the first point of the match.
Chicago's Big Ten Team expanded its lead to 3-0 with a pair of wins early in singles. Vandixhorn got things started with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Eli Ogilvy, and Seidman followed shortly after with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Josip Krstanovic. Seidman is 17-7 in his first year in the lineup.
Minnesota rattled off a couple wins in a row to fight back to a 3-2 deficit with victories at Nos. 1 and 6. The Gophers also led 6-5 in the third set at No. 3, but Zieba refused to let them get any closer as he finished off his tiebreak win at No. 2.
Northwestern returns home next weekend to take on Nebraska (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Iowa (Sunday, noon). Both matches are scheduled to take place inside the Combe Tennis Center, but weather permitting, could be moved outside to the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
