EVANSTON, Illinois –Sophomore Ryan Lumsden has been named the Big Ten co-Golfer of the Week, the Conference announced on Wednesday. This is Lumsden's second Conference honor of the season, he also was named Golfer of the Week on October 5 after winning the Marquette Invitational.
Lumsden turned in the best round of his college career on Tuesday to rocket up the leaderboard and earn a Top-3 finish at the 25th Puerto Rico Classic. He carded two eagles in a three-hole stretch early in his round on the way to a 6-under 66.
The London native began Tuesday's third-and-final round in a tie for 23rd place and, after teeing off on No. 8, opened his loop with a birdie and bogey back-to-back. But he then burst out of the turn to eagle the 562-yard, Par-5 No. 11 and the 289-yard, Par-4 No. 11, and then birdie the 544-yard, Par-5 No. 15. He added another birdie on No. 4 to polish off a 66, the lowest 18-hole score of any Wildcats golfer this season.
Lumsden played Rio Mar's four Par-5 offerings at 5-under on Tuesday, with three birdies to go along with the eagle on No. 11. Over the course of the weekend he was 7-under on Par-5 offerings, best in the elite 74-player field in Puerto Rico.
This marks Northwestern's second consecutive competition that produced a Big Ten Golfer of the Week. Freshman Everton Hawkins received the honor following his 3-0 performance and walk-off, title-clinching putt at the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, March 3, at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona.
