EVANSTON, Ill. – Two of the top defensive teams in the Big Ten square off Sunday in Madison when Northwestern travels to the Kohl Center to take on No. 7/5 Wisconsin. Tip time is set for 5:30 p.m.
Wisconsin is first in the Big Ten in scoring defense (60.2) and Northwestern is second (64.6) while the 'Cats rank first in opponent field goal percentage (.390) and the Badgers are close behind in fourth (.400).
Northwestern lost its second consecutive game Tuesday while playing without the services of leading scorer Scottie Lindsey, falling 68-61 to visiting Illinois. Bryant McIntosh topped 20 points for the third consecutive game, scoring a game-high 21, while Vic Law added 16 for NU. The 'Cats have only lost three games this season with all five of their regular starters in the lineup with those three losses coming by a combined 10 points.
McIntosh enters Sunday's contest four assists shy of becoming the second player in school history to record 500 career assists. Michael Thompson dished out a school-record 528 assists from 2008-11. McIntosh's 496 assists are the second most of any non-senior in the nation (Kahron Ross, Lehigh; 497).
Northwestern won last season's lone meeting with Wisconsin, 70-65, in Evanston Jan. 12 behind a game-high 28 points from McIntosh. NU's last true road win over a ranked team came Jan. 29, 2014 when it posted a 65-56 victory over No. 14 Wisconsin in Madison.
Scouting Wisconsin
The Badgers (21-3, 10-1) come into Sunday's game in first place in the Big Ten after escaping with a 70-69 overtime victory at Nebraska Thursday night. Nigel Hayes led Wisconsin with 20 points including hitting the decisive 3-pointer late in the extra session. Ethan Happ paces the team with averages of 14.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 60.5 percent from the field. Wisconsin leads the Big Ten in scoring defense (60.2 ppg).
