Massey records first-half hat trick to lead Wildcats

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 8 Northwestern closed out its regular season in style Sunday afternoon, rolling to an 8-2 win over Michigan State at Lakeside Field.

On Senior Day, Pascale Massey recorded a hat trick in the first half alone while classmate Elena Curley also scored a goal. Puck Pentenga contributed a goal to go along with two assists, raising her Big Ten-leading total to 16.

It was Michigan State that struck first just 75 seconds into the contest as Grace Santi scored on a deflection to give the visitors the early advantage. The remainder of the half was all Northwestern, though.

Massey recorded her first goal at 6:55 as she drove the right endline and beat Mairi Fletcher to level the score. The contest remained tied until the Wildcats broke the game open in the last 10 and a half minutes of the half, scoring five times.

Pentenga put NU in front with a goal off a penalty corner at 24:36. Nearly three minutes later, the 'Cats scored off a corner again as Kirsten Mansfield scored off a deflection off a hit by Pentenga to make it 3-1.

The advantage grew to four at 30:57 thanks to a gorgeous goal. Lily Katzman's long through ball to Saar de Breij in the circle was one-touched to Massey who dove and extended her stick, knocking the ball into the goal for her second tally of the day.

Just 49 seconds later, Curley's shot deflected in off the leg of a Spartan defender, extending NU's lead to 5-1. Northwestern got one final goal with just nine seconds left in the opening stanza. Massey completed her hat trick, taking a feed from Pentenga and finishing alone on the goalie, giving Northwestern a convincing 6-1 lead at the break.

Northwestern cruised the rest of the way. Michigan State got a goal back at 39:25 on a tally by Kendal Anderson, but the Wildcats got a goal from Saar de Breij on a nice deflection from Katzman at 43:39 before Eva van Agt scored off a defender at 65:40 to complete the scoring.

NU finished with a 22-6 advantage in shots and an 11-2 edge in penalty corners.

Northwestern (13-5, 6-2 B1G) is the No. 4 seed for Big Ten tournament which gets underway next Sunday. The Wildcats will host fifth-seeded Rutgers a quarterfinal round match beginning at 11:30 a.m.
