
Northwestern Opens Home Slate with Georgia, Georgia Tech

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern men's swimming and diving team will kick off their 2017-18 home campaign by hosting a pair of schools from the state of Georgia. The Wildcats will host the Georgia at 4 p.m. CT this Friday, Oct. 20, followed by a dual meet with the Georgia Tech at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21.

#B1GCats last competed against the Yellow Jackets at the Georgia Tech Last Chance Meet in 2014. This will also mark the Wildcats' first competition against the Bulldogs since the Georgia Invitational in 2007.
Junior Will Hofstadter paced the Wildcats in their opening meet against Eastern Michigan, placing first in two individual events [100 breast, 200 breast] and leading the 'Cats to first-place finishes in two relay events [200 medley, 200 free]. Northwestern ended the day with eight first-place finishes before ultimately falling 153-141.
After earning a pair of victories in his collegiate debut, first-year Liam Gately looks to continue his hot start. The Berthoud, Colorado native won the 200 free in 1:40.10 and the 500 free at 4:39.75 against Eastern Michigan. First-years DJ Hwang and Jeffrey Durmer also had strong showings, placing 1-2 in the 1000 free event in 9:29.17 and 9:39.74, respectively.
The No. 7-ranked Georgia Bulldogs opened their campaign with wins against Emory and North Carolina, led by head coach Jack Bauerle. Senior Jay Litherland paced the Bulldogs by winning three events [200 free, 200 back, 400 IM] against North Carolina last time out.
Georgia Tech opened their season with a victory against Pittsburgh in Atlanta. First-year Caio Pumputis led the Jackets, recording a NCAA B qualifying time of 1:58.34 in the 200 breast event for the win.
