Northwestern Gets B1G Road Win at Rutgers

1/29/2017 3:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Northwestern used a huge second half run to blow past Rutgers on Sunday at the Rutgers Athletic Center. The Wildcats got back to their winning ways with a 55-37 win over the Scarlet Knights.

The 'Cats (16-5, 5-3) have now won three of four to maintain their position in the top-four of the Big Ten standings.

Northwestern used a 17-0 run to erase a 19-15 Rutgers' lead with 5:20 to go in the first half. Ultimately the run got up to 27-4, which helped the 'Cats build a 42-23 lead.

The Wildcats held Rutgers to 18 points in the second half. The Northwestern defense allowed the Scarlet Knights to shoot just 25 percent from the field for the game, including only 5-of-20 from beyond the arc.

On the flip side, the 'Cats shot 46 percent (22-of-48) and hit 7-of-15 from three, including four of their first six in the third quarter to blow the game open.

Lauren Douglas led the way for Northwestern with a game high 16 points. Amber Jamison added 10, her fourth straight game in double figures. Douglas added three rebounds and two blocks to her final stat line.

Nia Coffey had a solid all-around performance with seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Ashley Deary did the same with eight points, six assists and five steals.

Both teams came out of the gates slow, shooting just above 30 percent in the first half. Northwestern was scoreless for the first four minutes of the game but still took a 22-19 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes. Seven Wildcats put the ball in the basket in the first half.

Chicago's Big Ten Team returns home on Wednesday, Feb. 1, when Wisconsin comes to town for a 7 p.m. game.
