EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern aims to stay on the winning track and remain in the hunt for the top of the Big Ten standing when the Wildcats host Nebraska Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.
Northwestern is seeking its first five-game Big Ten winning streak since the 1965-66 season. A win on Thursday would give the Wildcats their best eight-game start to the conference season since the 1943-44 team opened 6-2.
At 16-4, Northwestern is off to its best 20-game start to a season in school history.
After playing five of its first seven Big Ten games on the road, Northwestern is opening a stretch during which it plays five of its next seven at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats have posted a 4-1 record in their first five league road contests.
The Wildcats are coming off a 74-72 road win at Ohio State on Sunday. Scottie Lindsey paced NU with a game-high 21 points while Bryant McIntosh contributed 17.
Lindsey has scored in double figures in all 20 games this season. It's the most consecutive games with 10+ points for a Northwestern player since John Shurna compiled 22 in a row during the 2011-12 campaign. Lindsey and Nebraska's Tai Webster are the only Big Ten players to score in double figures in each of their team's games this season.
The Wildcats are limiting their opponents to 38.7 percent shooting from the field this season, the 13th-best mark in the nation. Northwestern's foes shot 40.1 percent during the 2015-16 season, the school's best mark since the 1998-99 season. The Wildcats' average of 64.3 points allowed per game ranks second in the Big Ten to only Wisconsin (60.9 ppg).
Northwestern has won its last three meetings with Nebraska, including posting a 74-66 victory in this season's first matchup between the teams Jan. 8 in Lincoln. Lindsey scored 19 points in the contest as the Wildcats rallied back for the win.
Nebraska leads the all-time series with Northwestern, 7-5.
Scouting Nebraska
The Cornhuskers (9-10, 3-4 B1G) have dropped their last four games since opening their Big Ten season with three straight wins. Nebraska's slide began with a 74-66 loss to Northwestern in Lincoln Jan. 8. Each of the team's last two losses have come in heartbreaking fashion as Ohio State and Rutgers both hit game-winning shots in the final second of play. Senior guard Tai Webster leads the team and ranks fourth in the Big Ten with an average of 18.1 points per game while Glynn Watson Jr. is eighth in the league at 14.6 points per contest. Nebraska is first in the conference with an average of 7.3 steals and second with 13.0 offensive rebounds per game.
