'Cats Fall to No. 1 Maryland in Big Ten Action

9/30/2016 9:49:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern surrendered three second-half goals to No. 1 Maryland on Friday night that led to a 4-0 defeat to the nation's top-ranked team at Martin Stadium.

The loss gives Northwestern a 2-7-1 record overall, with a 1-3-1 mark in Big Ten Conference paly. Maryland moves to 7-0-2 for the season, and 4-0-1 in conference play.

The Terrapins received goals from four different players on the evening, including Gordon Wild, Amar Sejdic, Jake Rozhansky and George Campbell.

Maryland started the game with most of the possession in the opening 10 minutes.  Northwestern senior goalkeeper Francisco Tomasino made a good save on a curled effort from just outside the box, before Northwestern's first counterattack ended in a low drive by senior Drew Rosenberg which went wide right.

In the 11th minute, Maryland opened the scoring through a quick attack. Rozhansky finished off a series of passes with a low finish to make it 1-0, with the final ball coming from Elney.

Northwestern played with assertiveness throughout the remainder of the half, while two successive blocks from senior Mike Roberge following a Maryland corner kick kept the deficit at one goal.  With 15 minutes to go until the break, Tomasino made another solid save on a low effort from a tight angle.

Following two goals from Maryland in the 51st and 61st minutes, the Wildcats had a chance to get on the board in the 78th minute when a Northwestern attack culminated in a shot from John Moderwell went just wide of the net.

F. Tomasino finished the match with four saves for the Wildcats.  Braden Thuraisingham replaced him in the 85th minute, marking the first appearance of his career.

Northwestern will be back on the pitch to face UCF on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Orlando, Fla., at 6 p.m. CT.
