Evanston, Ill.—Nathan Dearth scored his first goal of the season in the 77th minute to try and spark a Northwestern comeback, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell to cross-town foe DePaul, 2-1, Wednesday night at Martin Stadium.
Northwestern moves to 1-6-1 overall on the season, while DePaul advances to 5-2-2 in the 2016 campaign.
It was an up-and-down affair in the first half, with both teams trying to get on the board via counter attacks. Northwestern looked the more potent of the two teams, almost finding an opener in the 3rd minute, as Elo Ozumba forced the DePaul keeper to make a low save. Northwestern's counters almost came to fruition in the 15th and 20th minutes, with Jeffery Hopsin and Mike Roberge each putting shots on net, respectively.
Northwestern's defense, fresh off of a clean sheet against then-No. 3 Indiana, looked dominant, clearing most of DePaul's early chances. In the 35th minute, DePaul was able to find a gap, as Simon Migally was finished a cross to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats posted a season-high 17 shots compared to DePaul's 12. Northwestern outshot the Blue Demons in the second half by a 12-5 margin and finished the game with seven shots on target to DePaul's four.
Northwestern dominated possession, keeping the ball in the attacking half for nearly the entire final 45 minutes. Ozumba again had the first chance of the half, but his near post redirection was deflected for a corner.
The Wildcats had a flurry of chances after the 63rd minute, beginning with Camden Buescher's dipping strike from 30 yards forcing a save and corner. In three a three-minute stretch of the second half, Northwestern earned three corners and had five shots, culminating in Mike Roberge attempting a bicycle-kick that just missed the frame.
With Northwestern pressing for the equalizer, DePaul was able to again strike on a counter, with Zach El-Shafei's daisy-cutter from 25-yards finding its way into the bottom corner in the 77th minute.
The goal galvanized the Wildcats as the squad earned a corner kick just seconds after the restart. A goal-line flurry off the corner ended as Dearth smashed the ball into the net. Mike Roberge and Brandon Medina were credited with assists on the play.
Northwestern pushed forward in the final 10 minutes and created several chances, including a corner kick in the final minute of regulation that Buescher delivered into the box, but the header by Dearth went wide, sealing DePaul's 2-1 victory.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 25, hosting Michigan at 1 p.m. CT at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium. Sunday's game will be Parents' Day and Alumni Day.
