9/25/2016 4:17:00 PM | Men's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. — Senior Mike Roberge scored the game-winner in the 107th minute to lead Northwestern to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Michigan Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium.

Elo Ozumba and M. Roberge were Northwestern's goal scorers on the afternoon, while Nathan Dearth picked up a pair of assists and Camden Buescher and Drew Rosenberg each tallied one assist.

The victory Moves Northwestern to 2-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Big Ten Conference play. Michigan drops to 0-6-2 on the campaign and is 0-4-0 against league opponents.

Northwestern played strong on the offensive end in the opening 45 minutes, garnering several scoring chances.

The Wildcats first chance game in the 5th minute off a set piece from 30 yards out. Buescher served a beautiful ball into the box that found the head of Mike Roberge, whose header narrowly missed the net. Roberge had another header later in the half that forced Michigan to make a team save on the goal line.

Northwestern broke the scoreless game in the 28th minute off a corner kick. Buescher played a ball to the far side, Nathan Dearth headed the pass towards goal and Ozumba finished it off to put NU in front, 1-0.

The goal was Ozumba's second of the season.

Michigan outshot Northwestern in the opening stanza, 10-6. Francisco Tomasino made four save in the period to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard. The #B1GCats goalkeeper finished the game with six saves.

The game pulled even in the 56th minute after Michigan's Yamann Sahlool launched a shot on net that F. Tomasino turned away, but Robbie Mertz was there for a rebound goal. Ivo Cerda was also credited with an assist on the play.

The two teams played 34 minutes of scoreless soccer before heading to overtime. This was the third time this season that Northwestern has played overtime soccer, while Michigan has seen extra time in five contests on the campaign.

After a relatively quiet first period of overtime, Northwestern upped the pressure in Michigan's back third and drew a foul 28 yards out from net in the 106th minute. Drew Rosenberg played a cross off the set piece to the far side of the box to Nathan Dearth, who put the ball towards net and found M. Roberge for the game-winning finish.

The goal was M. Roberge's first of the season.

Michigan finished the game outshooting Northwestern by a 23-14 margin and held a seven-three advantage in corner kicks.

Northwestern will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 30, when it welcomes No. 1 Maryland to Martin Stadium for a 7 p.m. CT kick.
