Coach Collins Names Co-Captains for 2016-17

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern head men's basketball coach Chris Collins has announced that redshirt senior Sanjay Lumpkin and junior Bryant McIntosh will serve as the team's co-captains for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

This is the second straight year that Lumpkin has earned the honor. The Wayzata, Minnesota, native has appeared in over 100 games during his career and started for the Wildcats in all 32 games last season. He has been a mainstay on the floor during his time in Evanston, averaging 20-plus minutes a game in his three full seasons.

Lumpkin has established himself as one of the best defenders in the league during his time in Evanston, twice leading the team in steals during his career. He was also impressive around the basket last season, pulling down an average of five rebounds per contest.

Away from the court Lumpkin has been just as impressive. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, who graduated Northwestern University in June with a degree in learning and organizational change, recently earned a second straight selection to the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Honors Court.

McIntosh was named a team captain for the first time in his career. After earning Big Ten All-Freshman honors in his first campaign, the Greensburg, Indiana, native was a consensus honorable mention All-Big Ten selection last season. McIntosh dished out a school single-season record 213 assists in 2015-16 and ranked second in the Big Ten and ninth nationally with an average of 6.7 assists per game. The #B1GCats floor general was second on the team in scoring with 13.8 points per contest. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors last year.

The team will hold its first practice of the fall on Sept. 15. Northwestern will play Illinois Springfield in an exhibition game on Nov. 4, before tipping off the season on Nov. 11 against Mississippi Valley State at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
