EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern remains at home to host Iowa April 8-10 for the second of four-consecutive weekends at Sharon J. Drysdale Field this April. Weather has adjusted the schedule to a 1 p.m. CT Saturday doubleheader and a noon CT Sunday single game. The Wildcats are coming off a brutally tough stretch of seven games against teams currently ranked among the nation's top-25 RPI squads, including six to begin Big Ten play. Northwestern was able to take a game off No. 1 Michigan in Ann Arbor to begin the league schedule before winning the finale at home last week against No. 22 Minnesota. Those games, coupled with NU's traditonally tough nonconference slate, have Northwestern all the way up at No. 52 in the current NCAA RPI despite being nine games under .500. The current refrain for the rest of the season now is simply "Just win, baby!"
Iowa enters Evanston with a 1-7 Big Ten record after playing a midweek doubleheader at Nebraska Wednesday. The Hawkeyes batted the Huskers close the entire way, falling in the first game to a walk-off single before dropping the second contest by a 3-1 score. Like Northwestern's current under .500 mark, Iowa's 9-23 overall record is a bit deceptive.
Northwestern freshman Morgan Nelson had a breakout series in her first action at Sharon J. Drysdale Field last weekend, torching Minnesota and its vaunted pitching for a .625 average and a 1.500 slugging percentage to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Nelson raised her season batting average 55 points and did so with power on a pair of home runs and a double.
Meanwhile, senior Fran Strub is getting regular at-bats for the first time in her career during Big Ten play, and she is RAKING. Strub is batting .778 (7-for-9) with two doubles and a walk-off home run during league action, and she has done this against No. 1 Michigan and No. 22 Minnesota. #HotStart
